Doctoral thesis, Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Abstract
During the late Qing dynasty, the culture of epigraph appreciation and collection was
characterized by wide participation, diverse research outcomes, and a flourishing
epigraph market. This era witnessed an unprecedented accumulation of epigraphic
artifacts. Among the notable collectors, Miao Quansun stands out as the most
prominent figure. Investigating Miao Quansun’s epigraph-related activities not only
fills gaps in the study of his contributions to epigraphy but also provides a broader
view of the late Qing epigraph culture. This research comprehensively collects Miao
Quansun’s epigraphic literature from his works, diaries, letters, and writings, aiming
to portray various facets of late Qing epigraph appreciation and collection centered
around him. The study reveals that Miao Quansun was a leading figure in the field of
epigraphy, excelling in the search, recording, and dissemination of epigraphic artifacts.
His methods of collection were diverse, his categories comprehensive, and his
organization systematic. While inheriting traditional philological methods, Miao also
developed unique principles for appreciation and collection, enriching the theoretical
framework of epigraphy and pioneering new avenues for its study. This research delves into Miao Quansun’s mentorship and social network, interactions with
grassroots epigraph assistants, and active participation in the epigraph market.
Additionally, it explores the influence of his epigraph appreciation and collection
activities on his calligraphy and literary works, reflecting his artistic values. Through
a multifaceted exploration of Miao Quansun’s activities in epigraph appreciation and
collection, the study establishes his significant role in the inheritance and development
of late Qing epigraph culture, revealing the flourishing state of epigraph appreciation
and collection during this period.
