Abstract
The fractures behavior represents most critical issues in the automotive and aerospace fields. Thus, this paper shifted to estimate and analyze the crack criteria by using the mathematics' laws that limited in E 1820-01 standard and the result affirmed by applied the numerical solutions of ansys to estimate the fracture toughness value KIC beside the energy release rate of biomass composite. The specimens subject the test were preparing from different percentage from Kenaf Mat (KM) and Unsaturated Polyester resin (UP) 20%KM - 80%UP and 40% KM - 60% UP respectively, as well the other composite properties will be calculated via using the tensile test. The fracture characterizations of this composite carried out by using the Compact Tension (CT) specimen that commonly used for determining Mode-I fracture properties, whereas the fracture toughness has found to be independent of pre-crack length. The tests were performed at room temperature. The numerical simulations of ansys model results refer to a good agreement with experimental data for computed the fracture toughness values. The fracture toughness KIC of 20% KM-80% UP and 40% KM-60%UP equivalent to 0. 76 MPa m0.5 and 2.0 MPa m0.5 respectively. Unambiguous related between the fracture amount and fiber percentage of composite. On another hand there are unlimited mechanism of cracks paths derive from randomly kenaf mat packs specially in the frontal process zone of crack tip.
