Heating value determination of green and brown balsam fir (Abies balsamea) needles.

Abstract
Combustion analysis tests were performed six times (three times for each sample) using a 1341 Plain Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter on air dry green and brown balsam fir (Abies balsamea) needles taken in Frederiction, New Brunswick, Canada to determine their heating values. The green needles had an average moisture content (dry basis) of 49.8 percent while 11.1 percent for the brown needles. The heating values are 5,757 btu/lb and 9,512 btu/lb, respectively. Discussions to consider the utilization of balsam fir needles for fuel in the future were given.
