Abstract

Literature circles, as a reading activity that integrates literature into language learning through peer interaction, have gained popularity in recent years. The present study, therefore, aims to investigate the effectiveness of literature circles for English major students in Chinese tertiary education. It seeks to determine whether literature circles can effectively enhance students’ reading comprehension and reading motivation, as well as to gauge the participants’ attitudes towards using literature circles in their language learning. To evaluate the effectiveness of literature circles, the mixed methods quasi-experimental design was employed. A total of 74 subjects from two intact classes were selected using non-probability sampling procedures from a private university in northwest China. The study spanned 13 weeks, during which the experimental group engaged in literature circles, while the control group received no treatment. Data was collected using reading tests, questionnaires, and reading logs.
