Abstract

In urban environments, the role and importance of street furniture as an influential factor in increasing urban sustainability has received less attention and focus. Street furniture design is differs based on culture, local materials, population, social activities, economic perspective, safety vision, and climate conditions of the city or even district. This study was conducted to discover these differences, identify the connection between "sustainable urban design" and "street furniture," and propose a comprehensive framework that includes criteria for sustainable street furniture in the 17th district of Tehran. In this regard, the best planning documents and strategies were used to develop a checklist of Evaluative Criteria for Sustainable Street furniture (ECSSF). Then, by evaluating the study area based on ECSSF, a complete picture of the district's physical planning (location), physical design, and socio-economic characteristics was obtained. The present research employed a mixed methodology, including qualitative (field observation and in-depth interviews) and quantitative methods (survey questionnaire). Indexing data and interpretative analysis method, Test of normality, Pearson correlation, multivariate linear regression model, independent sample TTest, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were the employed instruments. In the end, methodological triangulation was applied to develop a comprehensive understanding of phenomena and test validity through the convergence of information from different methods. The 17th district suffers from significant deficiencies in sustainability and needs serious improvements, especially in the socio-economic category. As a result, street furniture of the 17th district of Tehran can achieve a recognizable identity, pedestrian satisfaction, and a high level of sustainability by employing the local performance criteria suggested in this study. The results also show that urban design, street furniture, and sustainability are interrelated, so by enhancing the quality of street furniture, the sustainability of urban environments will increase. Further studies can explore the appropriate standards and guidelines for other development projects to produce and present sustainable street furniture for any urban environment. The study is expected to contribute to the expansion of sustainable street furniture, quality urban areas, and citizen satisfaction.
