Abstract

The present invention relates to a liquid state bioconversion process for the treatment of sewage treatment plant sludge prior to disposal. According to the present invention the said process is a liquid state bioconversion process for the treatment of sewage treatment plant sludge by mixed filamentous fungi in a reactor running under natural conditions. The process is operated on a batch basis at controlled mixing rates but under natural conditions and with no additional aeration added to the process. The process enhances the biodegradation, bioseparation, biosettling and biosolid accumulation of the sludge, where-by the produced biosolids can be used as pretreated material for rapid composting in a solid state bioconversion process. The biodegraded sludge supernatant can be disposed of without any further treatment.
