Abstract

Interruption is perceived to impact the dynamic of the conversation flow negatively. While to some extent it is true, it must be considered that interruption can function in different ways – it can be both cooperative and disruptive (Ghilzai, 2018; Zhao, 2010). The former would indicate the interruptions are performed to showcase their support and reassurance, whereas the latter are to demonstrate and indicate disagreement. How interruption is demonstrated might also differ from one another. It can be simple, overlapping, butting in, or silent (Beattie, 1982; Ferguson, 1977, as cited in Larasati, 2014). These rich elements of interruption may pose as new information to speakers. The types and functions of interruption must be made apparent so that the speakers understand the impact of creating an interruption and how it can influence conversations.
