Abstract

Geological hazards, commonly called geohazards, are potential hazards of high magnitude and low occurrence (Doyle, 2004). What is meant here is that the escalation into a disaster from geological factors is considered occasional. However, the magnitude will be immense when it does occur, and the impact is difficult to predict. The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR) groups natural hazards into geological hazards, hydrometeorological hazards, biological hazards, technological hazards, environmental degradation and other factors that have a low-capacity disaster risk from various components in society (UN-ISDR, 2008). This paper will specifically discuss hazards from geological factors, such as earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, subsidence, sinkholes, and various other land surface shifts. Geohazards have the highest level of uncertainty among other types of hazards (Ratter, 2013).
