Abstract
This study investigated the incorporation of two lengths of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), i.e., MWCNT_long (length 10 - 30 µm) and MWCNT_short (length 0.5 - 2.0 µm), into epoxy resins and the use of a combination of three methods for dispersing the MWCNT into Epikote 828 epoxy resin. The MWCNTs were first mixed with the epoxy resin using a high-shear mixer, sonicated, and finally calendared by a three-roll mill with 4,4-diaminodiphenyl sulfone as the hardener. The fractograph of the flexural-fractured surface showed a significant difference in the fracture surfaces. The epoxy resin containing MWCNT showed an enhanced roughness in the fractured surface compared to the epoxy resin without MWCNT, which had a plain and featureless appearance. Adding 0.38 of MWCNT_short improved the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) by 14. However, adding MWCNT_long reduced ILSS by 17.9. This is because MWCNT_long's intensity ratio through Raman Spectroscopy, was higher than that of MWCNT_short, with values of 0.68 and 0.39, respectively. This suggests that MWCNT_long has a higher concentration of carbon atom defects, which reduces the quality of the nano-modified resin.
