Abstract

This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of aerospace steel, highlighting its critical role in aviation and space exploration. Aerospace steels are specially engineered materials designed to meet the demanding requirements of aerospace applications, offering a unique combination of properties such as a high strength-to-weight ratio, thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and fatigue resistance. The chapter begins with an overview of the classification and composition of aerospace steel, followed by the diverse applications of aerospace steel across airframes, engines, propulsion systems, landing gears, and other aerospace components, highlighting their significance in advancing aviation and space exploration technologies. Key processes and manufacturing methods, including melting and casting, thermomechanical working, heat treatment, machining, additive manufacturing, and powder metallurgy, are discussed in depth, emphasizing their importance in shaping the properties and performance of aerospace steel. Furthermore, the chapter addresses challenges and explores future directions, providing insights into the ongoing efforts to overcome obstacles and advance the field of aerospace steel. Through this comprehensive analysis, readers gain valuable insights into the fundamentals, processing methods, and applications of steel in the aerospace sector, underscoring their pivotal role in shaping the future of aerospace engineering and technology.
