Abstract

Aerospace materials were developed way before World War I when the first main principle of aviation was discovered in 1799 by Sir George Cayley. Since then, aerospace material has been developed from bamboo and paper until the current widely known composites used in modern aerospace applications. Natural fiber composites are emerging as an alternative to synthetic fibers in terms of cost-effectiveness, weight, and biodegradability. In this chapter, we will mainly discuss the development of composites in the aerospace industry and their applications. The review also discusses the historical development of aerospace materials and the future direction of using composite materials in constructing unmanned aerial vehicle structures. An example of a case study of a drone frame fabricated using pineapple leaf fiber, where the fibers were extracted from an extractor machine, is also presented.
