Abstract

Business mediation is underutilised in Malaysia. This chapter investigates the level of awareness and use of business mediation among SMEs in Malaysia, highlighting the growing need for alternative dispute resolution methods in commercial settings. The objective is to assess business owners’ awareness of mediation, explore current dispute resolution practices, and examine the potential for adopting mediation in the future. The study employs a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with 30 business owners from Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, and a desk- research methodology in collecting data. Findings reveal that most respondents have limited or no awareness of mediation, with only one having used it. However, all expressed willingness to consider mediation if properly introduced and supported. This chapter concludes that public education, policy support, and industry engagement are vital to increasing the adoption of business mediation in Malaysia.
