Abstract

This chapter investigates Karin Robles Bahrin’s debut novel entitled “The Accidental Malay” (2023), which will focus on its literary construct within the context of 21st century Malaysian novels written in English. The investigation seeks to uncover the intricate interplay between literature and society by analysing how the novel reflects the prevailing concerns and issues that weigh on the Malaysian psyche. The literary landscape of Malaysia has undergone significant transformations in recent decades, particularly in the realm of novels written in English. These narratives offer unique perspectives on the nation's cultural, social, and political fabric. This recent novel emerges as a representative work that delves into the multifaceted aspects of Malaysian society, shedding light on the elements that the author believes significantly impact the collective consciousness of Malaysians. This investigation of “The Accidental Malay” highlights the evolving nature of Malaysian literature and its capacity to capture the ever-changing social fabric of the nation. By exploring the novel's representation of societal elements, this chapter provides valuable insights into the intricacies of the Malaysian psyche, paving the way for a deeper appreciation and comprehension of contemporary Malaysian literature in the English language.
