Abstract

The agrochemical sector has increasingly become interested in nanomaterials (NMs) due to their unique qualities, including their small particle size at the nanoscale level, solubility, surface structure, and chemical composition aspects. Nanotechnology in agriculture offers advantages over traditional agrochemical products by effectively addressing inherent limitations such as low bioavailability, risks of organic solvent contamination, and rapid degradation through photolysis processes. Nanoparticles have been extensively studied for their applications in agriculture, mainly as pesticides and fertilizer delivery systems. In this chapter, we will focus on the development of these nanomaterials over time. Furthermore, this chapter explores the emerging functions of nanomaterials (NMs) in different domains of agrochemicals, including nucleic acid-derived pesticides, biopesticides, plant growth regulators (PGRs), and pheromones. In addition, we examine the challenges associated with the proliferation of nanomaterials in the agricultural chemical industry and their increasing industrialization. The utilization of nanotechnology in the development of agricultural chemical distribution systems has a significant potential to enhance agricultural production and sustainability. Improving the stability and dispersion of components in these systems enables accurate application of agricultural pesticides, leading to lowered pollution levels, lower residue, and decreased labor costs in farming techniques. This approach increases farm output and improves food security by optimizing the effectiveness of agricultural pesticides and ensuring the long-term sustainability of farming practices.
