Abstract
Forward osmosis (FO) has emerged as a promising technology for microalgae harvesting and wastewater treatment, particularly in Malaysia. Operating at ambient temperature and low hydraulic pressure, FO offers advantages such as lower energy consumption, improved water recovery, and reduced environmental impact. This review explores recent developments in FO membrane materials and processes for microalgae harvesting, examines common foulants and fouling mechanisms, and highlights effective fouling mitigation strategies. It also highlight gaps and suggests future directions in membrane design and FO hybrid systems to enhance the overall efficiency of FO technology in microalgae applications.
