Abstract

This study examines the impact of differences in corporate income tax policies between China and Malaysia on Chinese companies' investment decisions and performance, using Alibaba’s investment in Malaysia as a representative case study. By analyzing Alibaba's entry into the Malaysian market, the research identifies key factors contributing to its success. Firstly, Malaysia’s tax incentives, such as pioneer enterprise status, capital expenditure deductions, and exemptions in special economic zones, significantly reduced Alibaba’s initial investment threshold. These policies also enhanced its return on investment by lowering costs, enabling efficient capital repatriation, and providing long-term financial support for high-risk projects like cloud computing and big data. Secondly, Alibaba’s success extended beyond tax benefits. Its deep understanding of local market demands, proactive collaboration with the Malaysian government, and innovative integration of digital and traditional economies played crucial roles. These findings highlight the importance of leveraging tax incentives alongside developing tailored market strategies and fostering strong public-private partnerships. Alibaba’s experience offers valuable lessons for other Chinese enterprises seeking international expansion, emphasizing the need to adapt to local environments while utilizing financial incentives to maximize economic and social value creation.
