Exposure to airborne particulate in agriculture settings and its impact on worker performance under changing climate conditions

Abstract

Introduction: The effect of air pollution through particulates on farm workers in agricultural settings remains a key occupational hazard that farm workers face, particularly in fluctuating climates. However, there has been little research carried out on how exposure to particulates affects workers’ efficiency. This study aims to assess the effects of particulates (PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀) on performance, taking into consideration the effects of temperature as well as relative humidity. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 150 farm workers working under typical dusty conditions. The particulate exposure was measured by a hand-held air quality meter. The work performance was then assessed by work speed, accuracy and fatigue level with a Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion scale. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and linear multiple regression were used for data analysis. Results and Discussion: The results reported constant exposure to higher levels of particulates in an agricultural setting. The workers showed reasonably high accuracy in completing their tasks even though they were moderately to highly fatigued. This indicates that they adapted to environmental stressors. PM₂.₅ and temperature were found to be important independent predictors associated with reduced worker performance, but there was no significant relationship between relative humidity and worker performance. The joint exposure to air pollution and thermal stress may influence worker performance. Conclusion: Exposure to particulate matter and thermal conditions may contribute to variations in worker performance in agricultural settings. Occupational measures are needed to minimize exposure and maintain worker performance in the face of environmental and climate challenges.
