Abstract

Climate change has increasingly affected the livelihoods of coastal populations, particularly through income loss due to climate-related disasters such as flooding, coastal erosion, and unpredictable weather patterns. This paper reported on Sabak Bernam coastal community in Malaysia. The main objective of this paper is to investigates significant predictors among the socioeconomic determinants that decline the household income by sex disaggregation. Only respondents who responded in the questionnaire that their household income decline because of climate change (n=185 from n=238) are reported in this paper. Three null hypotheses tested are no significant socioeconomic determinant predicts the household income decline due to climate change among all respondents (Ho1), no significant socioeconomic determinant predicts the household income decline due to climate change among male respondents (Ho2), and no significant socioeconomic determinant predicts the household income decline due to climate change among female respondents (Ho3). Three Binary Logistic Regression Model are tested which are BLR Model 1 (all respondents), BLR Model 2 (male model) and BLR Model 3 (female model). Two BLR models are significant which are BLR Model 1 and 2. The BLR Model 3 is not significant. Three significant predictors obtained that the household income declines due to climate change in BLR Model 1 and 2 are entrepreneurship activities, household with non-poor poverty status, and respondent with no disability.
