Abstract

The spread Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a significant impact on people globally over the past two and a half years. By 7 September 2022, there had been 600,381,224 cumulative cases of COVID-19 and 6,461,816 COVID-19-related deaths worldwide. Studies have shown that the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 may infect children and adolescents more easily compared to previous strains of the virus. KAP theory states that to prevent COVID-19 transmission, people's knowledge, positive attitude, and good practices are essential. Compared with children, adolescents have less obedience with the education of schools and parents. In addition, adolescents are more likely to fail to follow good practice. There is limited research on middle school students’ knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of COVID-19 in China, particularly in less developed region. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of KAP of COVID-19 prevention and its predictors among middle school students in Duyun, Guizhou Province, China. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,240 middle school students from four selected middle schools using stratified random sampling. Data collection was performed using a self-administered questionnaire, whereas the predictors of KAP were determined using multiple logistic regression. The response rate was 100%. There were 61.0%, 35.1% and 25.4% of middle school students had good knowledge, positive attitude and good practice, respectively. There were 10, 5 and 8 significant predictors for knowledge, positive attitude and good practice respectively, where residence in urban, living with others, studying more than 5 hours a day during the school week, mild and high anxiety were the same predictors for knowledge and attitude. Although almost two-third of Guizhou students demonstrated good knowledge of COVID-19 prevention, a higher proportion reflected poor attitude and practices toward the pandemic. The implementation of a comprehensive and tailored health education plan, coupled with the active involvement of health professionals, teachers, and community hospital nurses, can help increase students' awareness and prevention practices of COVID-19. This can lead to a reduction in the incidence of COVID-19 in Duyun and other similar regions.
