Abstract

Child home injury is a global public health concern since it is a significant contributor to child morbidity and mortality, although it is preventable. It affects people physically, emotionally and economically. Inadequate study has been done on parental prevention practice of childhood injury at home especially among the community with low-socioeconomic status (SES). Therefore, this study aimed to determine the level of unintentional home injury prevention practice among B-40 parents of under-five children in Selangor and its associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 501 B40 parents of children under five years who had been selected using stratified random sampling method. The data were collected using a pre-tested self-administrated questionnaire. The study analysis was done using IBM SPSS version 28 software. Descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test and Logistic regression were used in this study. The statistical significance was considered to be at p<0.05. The prevalence of parental poor practice was 30.3% and was associated with parents aged 18 to 34 years old, have tertiary level of education, low perceived vulnerability, high perceived self-efficacy, poor knowledge, fewer number of children, have child with no history of injury and type of house. Predictors include parents aged 18-34 years old (AOR=1.585, 95% CI:1.030-2.441, p=0.036), parents with tertiary level of education (AOR=2.375, 95% CI:1.564-3.607, p<0.001), those who had children with no history of injury (AOR =1.643, 95% CI:1.091-2.474, p=0.017), low perceived vulnerability (AOR=1.725, 95% CI:1.120-2.656, p=0.013), high self-efficacy (AOR=0.552, 95% CI=0.355-0.859, p=0.009) and knowledge (AOR=2.865, 95% CI=1.842-4.456, p<0.001). In conclusion, the results may be used to identify high risk groups of B40 parents who can be focused on for educational programmes and interventions, subsequently reduce the prevalence of child home injury. Modifiable factors such as perception and knowledge must be addressed to improve practice especially among B40 parents aged 18 to 34 years old and having tertiary education level.
