Role of project management in sustainable development self-efficacy as mediating variable in oil and gas industry.
Doctoral thesis, Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Abstract
The study explores sustainable development's importance since the 1960s, driven by concerns about environmental degradation and resource depletion. Recognized as a competitive advantage, sustainability is crucial for organizational success, preventing negative consequences like damaged reputation, financial losses, and reduced competitiveness. However, research has predominantly focused on developed countries, neglecting developing nations like Yemen. Poor project management practices in Yemen negatively impact sustainability, with limited public access hindering the establishment of good sustainability practices. To bridge this gap, the study investigates the impact of project management and self-efficacy on sustainable development in Yemen's oil and gas sector. Drawing from Sustainable Project Management Theory, Transformational Leadership Theory, and Self-Efficacy Theory, data from 342 PetroMasila Co. respondents undergoes analysis using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Qualitative research supplements this, assessing model applicability through interviews with project experts. Results revealed project management and self-efficacy as significant predictors of sustainable development. Self-efficacy mediates the relationship between project management and sustainability, with planning and time management positively impacting sustainable development. Cost and risk management positively influence selfefficacy. Recommendations include improving project management practices and fostering self-efficacy through training and support. The study validates the developed model, aligning well with data and demonstrating reliability, with R2 values of 0.481 and 0.334 for sustainable development and self-efficacy, respectively. Self-efficacy's mediation and moderation roles in project management and sustainable development are affirmed, providing insights into PetroMasila's context in Yemen. Interviews with industry participants emphasize the role of project management and self-efficacy in achieving sustainable development. Strategic activities enhancing self-efficacy contribute significantly, with initiatives like employee wellness and environmental management systems proving effective. The study's findings underscore the critical connection between project management, self-efficacy, and sustainable development, offering valuable insights for global project managers implementing sustainability programs. The self-efficacy mediator model emerges as a beneficial tool for integrating sustainability into project management techniques, fostering a culture of sustainability and strengthening positive relationships globally.
