Abstract

Agropreneurship has gained significant attention as a key driver of sustainable agricultural development. Within this context, the adoption of innovative practices such as fertigation—a method combining fertilization and irrigation—holds promise for enhancing crop yields and resource efficiency. However, understanding the factors influencing agropreneurs' intentions to remain in fertigation programs is crucial for the long-term success and impact of such initiatives. Although the existing literature on determining agropreneurs' intention to remain in fertigation programs has provided valuable insights into the factors influencing program adoption, noticeable gap still persists in the comprehensive exploration of the dynamic interplay between socio-economic and psychological factors that shape agropreneurs' long-term commitment to fertigation. In light of the aforementioned challenges, this study applies Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to determine the agropreneurs’ intention to remain in the chilli and rock melon fertigation programme in Farmer’s Collection Centre (FCC). Along with variable personality trait and socio-economic constructs, it is believed to provide a clear understanding on the factors that affect agropreneurs intention. A quantitative analysis was conducted on 319 agropreneurs in FCC and the data were analyzed using descriptive and multiple linear regression analysis. The results revealed that subjective norm, personality trait, household income and fertigation experience collectively contribute to the intention of agropreneurs to remain in the fertigation programme. Based on the study, positive perceptions and support from peers, family and community creates a conducive environment for sustained participation. Likewise, by understanding the personality profile of agropreneurs in this study aids in tailoring support mechanisms and interventions to align with individual characteristics. The relationship between household income and intention is vital for developing inclusive and economically feasible strategies. Nevertheless, stakeholders can identify areas for improvement, refine training programs and address specific challenges by analyzing the impact of fertigation experience on intention, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness and sustainability of the fertigation initiative.
