Abstract

This study was conducted with a rigorous and systematic approach to fill the current research gap in understanding academic leadership styles, specifically academic staff performance. Business faculties were selected because they are frequently viewed as innovation hubs. However, academic staff performance is an essential challenge in these universities since empirical studies report increasing turnover rates and deteriorating student performance. The research used a quantitative approach to collect data from 300 academics from Malaysian Research Universities, ensuring a robust sample size. The respondents were chosen using purposive sampling, a method allowing diverse perspectives. PLS-SEM was used to analyse the data further, providing a comprehensive understanding of the relationships under study. Data was examined using SPSS and SmartPLS 4, further enhancing the reliability of our findings. The findings of this study, which shed light on the complex relationships between leadership styles, innovative work behavior, and academic staff performance, have significant practical implications. They show a relationship between inclusive and innovative work behavior; academic staff performance is significantly related to innovative work behavior, and a relationship between inclusive leadership and academic staff performance is mediated by innovative work behavior. It was also found that psychological ownership moderates the relationship between inclusive leadership and innovative work behavior, and psychological ownership also moderates the relationship between ambidextrous leadership and innovative work behavior. These findings contribute to the existing literature on inclusive leadership, ambidextrous leadership, innovative work behavior, and psychological ownership in academic staff performance, and they indicate viable methods for university academics to improve their performance in innovation, thereby enhancing the overall academic performance of Malaysian research universities.
