An intervention module on career maturity, career indecision, and career decision making self efficacy among high school students in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
Doctoral thesis, Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Abstract
Career decision-making is a crucial aspect that shapes the trajectory of an individual's
life. However, high school students in Medina, Saudi Arabia often encounter
challenges related to career indecision and a lack of decision-making self-efficacy,
impeding their ability to make well-informed choices about their future paths. To
address these challenges, tailored interventions are essential to enhance students'
career maturity and decision-making capabilities. This study focuses on assessing the
need, developing, and evaluating an intervention module specifically designed for high
school students in Saudi Arabia. It explores the factors influencing career decisionmaking,
emphasizing the prevalence and consequences of career indecision and low
self-efficacy. Theoretical frameworks such as social cognitive career theory and the
theory of planned behavior inform the development of culturally relevant
interventions. Utilizing the ADDIE model, the study undertook quantitative analysis,
design, and development of the intervention module through surveys and expert
ratings. The module, comprising nine constructs and 30 counseling activities, was
crafted in alignment with expert consensus and student perspectives. Subsequently, a
quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design was employed to gauge the impact of the
developed module. The sample included 190 students and 8 experts, selected
purposively for analysis and development, and 40 high school students from the
Medina Province Centre for implementation and evaluation. Quantitative instruments
including need assessment questionnaires, expert rating questionnaires, and surveys
on career maturity, indecision, and decision-making self-efficacy were utilized.
Analysis of the module's effectiveness indicated significant improvements in career
maturity, indecision, and decision-making self-efficacy. The study highlights the
necessity of customized interventions to address career-related challenges among high
school students. By focusing on the development and evaluation of the intervention
module itself, this research emphasizes its potential to enhance career development
initiatives tailored to the unique needs of high school students in Saudi Arabia.
