Abstract

This study investigates the seismic response of a 10-story reinforced concrete (RC) building incorporating both shear walls and diagonal bracing, with a focus on soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects under earthquake loading. Non-linear time-history analysis was performed using four real earthquake records, comparing fixed-base and flexible-base conditions modeled with a Winkler foundation. Results indicate that SSI increased the fundamental period by approximately 8 %. Under short-period ground motions like El-Centro and Friuli, base shear and story displacements increased by up to 17 % and 10 %, respectively. Conversely, during long-period earthquakes such as the Kobe earthquake, base shear and displacement decreased by 0.5 % and 6 %, respectively. The inclusion of SSI was found to intensify story drift in short-period records but reduce it under long-period motions. The study highlights that considering SSI in dual lateral systems can provide beneficial results for long-period seismic excitations, but may be detrimental for short-period events. These insights offer practical implications for mid-rise building design on soft soils in seismic regions.
