Abstract

Playing-related Musculoskeletal Disorder (PRMD) is highly prevalent among tertiary student pianists. Investigating the lived experiences of tertiary student pianists who have suffered from PRMD can help identify the personal and social factors leading to their injuries. Moreover, it can also enable educators, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to understand their experiences, needs, and thoughts, thereby providing them with more appropriate help and treatment for themselves. At present, PRMD has not received sufficient attention in China. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the lived experiences of tertiary student pianists who suffer from PRMD. Based on their lived experiences, this study aims to understand their risk factors for PRMD, their coping strategies with PRMD, and their subjective experiences, thoughts, perspectives, and feelings after injury. In addition, the issue of how their PRMDrelated experiences influenced them is inspected in detail. The study uses the qualitative research method to explore this lived experience, using data from one-onone interviews and focus group discussions with twenty-five student pianists at seven higher education institutions in Chengdu, China. Eighteen themes related to the research questions emerged from the results. The results of this study emphasise that tertiary student pianists should develop high self-efficacy and good self-regulation abilities to cope with the consequences of PRMD. At the same time, a reliable social support system should be established so that the injured student pianists can get help and support from social relations. This study's results can assist educators and healthcare providers in empirically understanding PRMD among tertiary student pianists, enabling them to provide appropriate education and treatment. The value of this study is that it differs from the outcomes presented by previous quantitative studies that apply to most musicians. Instead, this study investigated tertiary student pianists' thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and perspectives after suffering from PRMD, as well as the influence of personal, social, and environmental factors on them, thereby developing a deeper understanding of the pianists' PRMD-related lived experiences and filling in the gaps in the existing literature.
